Boycott Disney With Me
It’s proof that the happiest place on earth isn’t so happy after all.
Disney hotel workers, represented by Unite Here! Local 681, are walking—or working, rather—on eggshells after the contract they were under expired in February. Many are fearful that on top of already low wages, they may be stripped of health benefits, too.
Though Mickey Mouse and his posy of corporate moguls may be sitting comfortably atop millions, those who work behind the scenes to make Disney what it is—maids, bell-hops, cooks and dishwashers—are barely keeping their heads above water, living paycheck-to-paycheck at a measly $11-14 per hour.
And now, the mega corporation, which prides itself upon being happy and magical, is hoping to strip workers of even more.
Disney has proposed eliminating a free health care plan used by a number of area unions. Furthermore, the corporation is looking to create a new class of laborers who would work no more than 30 hours per week receive no sick, vacation, or holiday pay.
So much for the wonderful world of Disney.
Recently bringing light to the issue were 32 labor activists who were arrested after failing to obey a police officer. Prior to being cuffed, the protestors participated in an hour-long march from one of three Disney-owned hotels to the gates of Disneyland , catching the attention of both tourist and Disney hotel employees.
Why doesn’t Disney—and the rest of the world, for that matter—have more peaceable vigilantes who are willing to stand up in the name of labor injustice wherever it is found?
Martin Luther King, Jr. once said, “injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” Indeed, the struggles surrounding Unite Here Local 681 members go beyond labor issues. They are human rights issues.
The events surrounding the labor protestors and workers are a reminder to us all that together, we can and will make a difference. You can join California ’s protestors by showing support for the working people of Disney. Boycott Disney amusement parks and products and speak against the wrongs Disney has and is proposing to commit. |

Hershey Park, too
When a lot of people heard that Hershey was outsourcing to Mexico and closing its Peppermint Patty plant in Pa., they decided to not go there with the kids. Perhaps if more and more people heard about this stuff, alternative vacation spots for the family would be known; do you have any suggestions?
Thanks for posting this -- please post more.

Well
I've boycotted Disney for years
but when a contracted was signed (years ago) with the Teamsters, I no longer boycotted them.
I have an upcoming vacation to Disney for Labor Day weekend in Florida. Although you mention the actions as California, I can do my part by handing out material to workers while I'm staying at Disney. I may not be "protesting", but I'm staying, using my money, so I might as well also be ensuring that the workers that I meet get a little additional information about their CA counterparts and what we can all do together to make a difference in each others lives.
So, I'm not boycotting them, but I will ensure that my voice is heard on property as I speak to Disney workers and management.
Bring the video camera
Just in case they lock you up, Disney definitely sucks, where else would they make toys in places where the workers eat dirt sandwiches and charge people outrageous prices. Well almost everywhere now. Screw Disney and everything they touch. Walt would be rolling over in his grave if he saw the crap movies they toss out regularly when back in his day it would take 2 years to draw.

Thank you all for your
Thank you all for your support. Unfortunately, the true Disney is masked by the the fun colors, happy magic, and blissful glitter which the corporation flaunts on a daily basis. Sadly, what many don't realize is that Disney exploit's poor children only to entertain rich ones. The cooperation profits and children the world over are victimized. For those in developing nations, the victimization comes in the form of hard labor and poverty while those in the Western world suffer from afluenza spawned by ignorance.
Keep up the good work. Education and outreach are key and though it may be cleche, knowledge is power!
