Center For Union Facts ? Anti-Union Lobby At It's Worst

Mom always said "Believe none of what you read and only half of what you see"

Well we had installed Google Ads on the site and quite a few Anti-Union ones were poping up , like "The Center For Union Facts" , "UFCW Exposed" and other creative Educational Purpose websites whose main focus is to tarnish unions through truths , half-truths and out right propaganda . What we do know is that Rick Berman is the creator of many Anti-union websites , while he will not say exactly who his financers are , the public can dare to guess .

FROM: PRWatch.org (our new aggregator)

Berman specializes in personal attacks, smear tactics and playing loose with the facts. He has raised millions of dollars from tobacco, booze, biotech, fast food, grocery and other businesses eager to pay Berman to do their dirty work.

FROM : The Wall Street Journal on Fox news ads in 2006 against the Employee Free Choice Act

To fund the antiunion campaign, including the newspaper ads and one radio spot, Union Facts raised $3 million from companies, foundations and individuals that Mr. Berman won't identify.

A broader attack

The Berman-led campaign is just one part of a broader assault on labor. Only about 100 union-busting consultants existed in the late 1960s, but some 2,000 such firms today constitute a $1 billion-a-year industry. They draft anti-union literature, teach managers how to scare off union support, and run workshops with titles like “How to Stay Union Free.”

Of course his tactics have been noticed , but unfortunately it dosen't seem to get any airplay on the news , ahem , the big corporate news that is .

Might I point out that hoaxing and spin doctoring on the internet have been in play almost as long as it has existed , take for example Bonsai Kitty which is in fact a Hoax (wikipedia -"Despite a massive negative response and much belief otherwise, the entire site is an elaborate hoax by a group of MIT graduate students.") - This goes back to what Mom said about believing

So please spread the word about this guys intentions , even if this is old news to some , there are a lot of people who believe everything they read .

I am deeply afraid of a world full of Non-union , pregnant mercury poisoned , animal killing PETA activists drinking and driving , who can't get summer jobs cause they would make a killer $6 bucks an hour and don't have a free internet .

The "Center for Union Facts" Is Rick Berman's Newest Fiction

February 13, 2006

On February 13, full-page advertisements in the New York Times, the Washington Post and the Wall Street Journal, along with a media stunt involving a dinosaur, announced a new union-bashing front group called Center for Union Facts. Who is behind the ad and their UnionFacts.com website? Nothing in the advertisements or the webpage mentions Rick Berman, but -- Bingo! -- that's who owns the website domain name. Rick Berman is a right-wing lobbyist who has built a lucrative career establishing industry-funded front groups including FishScam.com, the Center for Consumer Freedom, the Employment Policies Institute, the Employment Roundtable and ActivistCash.com. Berman specializes in personal attacks, smear tactics and playing loose with the facts. He has raised millions of dollars from tobacco, booze, biotech, fast food, grocery and other businesses eager to pay Berman to do their dirty work. Another Berman connection to the Center for Union Facts is Sarah Longwell, the group's PR contact, who has also worked for Berman's Employment Policies Institute.

Good work and excellent discussion.

A couple years ago when Union Review first hit the Internet I set up the Google ads -- I was still on Blogspot.com at that time. When I saw all the anti-labor ads coming up I learned how to filter them and started to do that with a few of the primary sites - then I thought, no ... let the ads show up here and let people see what these folks are doing and what they are saying.

I like the idea of organizing ourselves to combat what IS being said and to defend against THEIR rhetoric. And even more importantly defend what we believe and why with actions; like shopping for union made goods, announcing victories, announcing and celebrating efforts that further the union movement.

When we talk about strengthening a union movement it is critical, in my opinion, to realize it is not just a management team that employs us that we need to organize and collectively bargain with; there are lobbies and political leaders, and unfortunately, well-funded groups like the ones you mention.

I have spent time filtering some of them today, and will continue to do so ... but I truly believe it is important to know what these morons say, how they say it, and to discern what their motivations are. I would say that 9 out of ten times, it is about more money for the upper management. The more we talk about and discuss mass firings at places at Circuit City, talk about nonunion made goods that union members needs to do their jobs, etc, the more we will change our collective minds and those around us. As they look to make more money we should be very conscious about where we spend ours.

That is important to this whole discussion for a few reasons. Earlier last week I had a chat with this guy who had all kind of statistics at his fingertips. He shared with me the fact that union members, on average, earn more than nonunion workers; which we all know; but we often don't realize our own buying power. We can choose where to shop and when to shop ... and more importantly ... who to boycott.

This Berman is some POS

Take a Looksie at this

"In an effort to rebuild their former influence, union officials have drawn up a political agenda that should give all Americans shivers.

It centers around stealing rights from employees and rigging federal laws to monkey-wrench business operations"

There are some great comments though , as I see there is an organizing drive for Nurses in Naples , Florida going on , as one of the commentors said:

"Rick Berman: I found it interesting that you chose Labor Day to disburse your antiunion rhetoric, especially in Naples with the upcoming union vote of the NCH nurses. How timely. It would seem that a more fair and balanced perspective should also be considered. Research indicates that your Center For Union Facts is an arm of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, and associated with the Right to Work Committee. I've read that you are the CEO and your wife is the bookkeeper. The organization is reported to be funded to the tune of 10 million dollars a year. I have also read that you have been connected with the lobbyist Jack Abramoff, and also have been employed by the Employment Roundtable. You apparantely professionally lobbied for the networking of industry, labor lawyers, and some government officials, which operate out of the same office as Berman and Company. With respect to labor unions, some of your comments were factual. You did give credit to unions for improving conditions for union and non-union workers. Then you immediately inject that corruption and embezzelment runs rampant among these unions. However, you failed your fair and balanced testby not mentioning The widespread corruption and embezzlement that exists within "big business". Let us not forget Enron, Global Crossing, Tyco, WorldCom, Arthur Anderson, and lest we not forget that bastion of Federal favoritism: Halliburton and their sidekick Kellogg, Brown and Root. In 2001 and 2002 alone there were over 17 corporations who were directly responsible for employeess loss of pensions, 401K's, health benefits and most importantly their jobs. Most of these people were non-union. Where is your outrage? Consider New Orleans, Hurricane Katrina: Halliburton and KBR were awarded, by the Government, a no bid contract to repair a U.S. base there. They laid off New Orleans citizens(who desperately needed the jobs) and brought in third world workers. The contractors were paid with U.S. taxpayer money. Where is the protection for the U.S.worker. Where is the outrage?"-charlieward

Richard , get this guy to visit our site , there are also a bunch of other great comments there :

"I worked in the steel industry for 35 years and was a union worker for 16 years and then management for 19. The union and company worked together and needed each other most of the time. Even during a company lockout of 6 months when I had to do a union job as management, the union workers helped me do thier job [ by telephone], to protect thier job for the future.
Look what's happened to our country and it's workers in the last 25 years with the decline of the unions. We need them now more than ever."-bossman1

Monday hearing may settle terms of NCH union vote

Friday, September 14, 2007

A hearing has been scheduled for Monday between a nurse unionizing group at the NCH Healthcare System and hospital officials in hopes of reaching an accord over whether a union election will be held, according to an official with the National Labor Relations Board in Tampa.

“Nobody asked for the hearing. We set it because we have a petition but no election (scheduled),” said Karen LaMartin, assistant to the NLRB regional director in Tampa. “We want it to move along.”

LaMartin said the hearing, which would be held in Miami, could be called off if the nurses’ group and its potential union, SEIU Florida Healthcare, and NCH representatives reach an agreement on terms of an election. That can happen right up to the hearing.

“We’re hoping to get an agreement, and in most cases the parties do agree to an election,” LaMartin said.

Union officials filed a petition Aug. 30 with the labor board to hold a union election among NCH’s registered nurses, who earlier this summer began collecting pledge cards in support of a union vote. The nurses submit they gathered the required 30 percent of signatures needed among the 850 registered nurses to request the election.

Nurses began the unionizing effort after mounting discontent with NCH administration over reduced work hours, higher patient ratios, and nurses being temporarily reassigned to floors without the proper training for those specialized patient-care floors. The nurses say such belt-tightening measures has been detrimental to patient care and administrators have not been giving them a voice.

NCH officials, who hired a national firm to oppose the union effort, has countered with “round-the-clock” sessions between management and employees to hear their grievances. Hospital administration has reduced patient ratios, addressed security concerns at North Naples Hospital and lifted salary caps to allow for raises of 8 percent to 10 percent for the nurses in October.

Hospital administrators say management and workforce differences can be resolved without the involvement of the Florida affiliate of the nation’s largest health-care union, which NCH officials say is more interested in collecting the nurses’ dues than representing the nurses and their particular concerns at the bargaining table.

Dr. Allen Weiss, president and chief executive officer of NCH, said Thursday that the hospital also wants to get their election moving along and is working with SEIU’s attorneys to work out the details. He said an agreement could happen before Monday’s hearing, which was scheduled once before and delayed.

“It’s quite possible,” Weiss said. “It depends on the other lawyers. Our attorney has spoken with them over the last few days. We go day by day.”

Matt Hourihan, a SEIU spokesman, declined comment about the election issues that have come into play.

The hearing is scheduled for 1 p.m. in Miami at the federal building.

Wonder what happened at that hearing , looks like a story on it's own . Someone wanna update it and publish ? I know there must be someone in Florida around here , eh ?
