Joe638 NYC Carries His Union's Banner At Workers Memorial Day Mass
Richard, I'm a friend of Joe638NYC and I would like to tell you and his other friends at Union Review about the proud and special event that Joe participated in today. The Workers Memorial Day construction mass was held in St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York City. This in itself is an awe inspiring event, but to top it off Joe and another member of our union "Steamfitters Local 638" were asked to carry our union's banner and lead our contingent into the Mass. I'll bet the hair on the back of his neck is still standing and his feet are still ten feet off the ground. Not many people in our union know the work and effort that Joe puts into being a good union man in our union or any other place where help is needed. So it was very gratifying to see this honor bestowed upon a man who well deserves it. In Brotherhood Jimbo638 PS. Richard if you would like to post this on Union Review in whole or just parts of it feel free. |

Jimbo, thanks for this brother
Jimbo,
As mentioned in my email, I am sorry that I didn't get to your note sooner. Thanks, though, for sending this to me. Joe mentioned that he had done this on a phone call we had that night, but it is awesome to hear from others as well.
It means a lot that Joe is here with us doing all the work that he is ... I am really glad you brought his accomplishment some light.

Yeah, I was a little bit of
Yeah, I was a little bit of a nervous wreck that day, Jimbo helped me get the pipe dope that was all over my head off and another brother found a nice restroom to freshen up.
I am, first and formost, very proud of the brotherhood I belong to. It is a great career, with great people who I consider my brothers and sisters, work partners and friends. We are a proud lot, and rightfully so, we helped create the NY skyline and our educated skills are sought after and needed world wide.
I will do anything humanly possible to maintain the standards our forefathers fought so valiantly for. Of course growing up with union ideals and working since I was a wee lad, I came to the realization that a worker without representation can be easily taken advantage upon.
In these dire days of the never ending corporate war against the working class, which is doing it's legally bound service in raising the profit margin each and every quarter for its shareholders, I see a future where if we do not unite and communicate all workers needs, we will be picked off one by one. I feel that if there was no solidarity, if there were only my union, we would be powerless. I, of course, speak in a completely independent fashion, my words are mine alone aside from the quotes I post, and the entire stories I snip.
It was a total honor to hold the banner on such a needed ocassion, being there you actually were able to say goodbye to people who you may have known, who perished in a way that you know the term "it could have been anyone" applies. It was also very encouraging to see that the managment side of our industry was right there with us, giving honor to our friends. We need each other, and in the words of the speaker from Bovis "we are a family"
Thanks for the letter Jimbo
Thanks for the story Richard and thanks for the comment Chuck
Anxiously waiting for Jimbo's first article,
Joe
NYC
As a few people know, I have been home in NY for the last couple days working with the Teamsters. I just thought to post another comment here instead of starting a whole new thread -- not because I want to blow smoke up Joe's ass -- but because I know this City well.
What I mean is that for a brother like Joe to find the time to do all the shit that he does, go to rallies, reports on this site and his own, communicates with people all over the country ... and just get through the day-to-day of being in NYC, well ... it is a big deal.
Today I did my work at a rally at City Hall Park, wrote most of what I needed for my story for the union, talked with many many people, and then went to dinner with a childhood friend ... and you know what? I am f'in exhausted! When I realize that I hadn't spent too much time on Union Review today, but got here only before crashing for the night and see Joe and Chuck made it over -- see that comments were posted and new stories made it up ... I just gotta tip my hat to Joe and ... Chuck, too ...
The union movement in the United States needs more brothers like these two -- and what is amazing is that we all know you are out there. People are doing their part everyday, maybe just not as visible as us ... and that's cool. I just hope that anyone moved by our gratitude for Joe and Chuck will come forward and let us know you are doing this with us. For whatever it is worth, it is just awesome to know we are all on the same page.
One brother who doesn't get here much is Jimmy from TeamstersOnline. He is running that site, as Joe is running his site and Chuck his with the same passion and enthusiasm. One day I would love for the four of us to sit at the same table to break bread together; let's make that happen.
