Naperville, Illinois School Bus Drivers Unite For Change in the Workplace
The workers at First Student in Naperville took the first steps toward a better workplace and securing their future. According to a release issues by the union, the vote count was 258-74; there is a total of 417 workers in the bargaining unit. This victory, the Union states, is the latest in the an effort to organize private school bus and transit workers across the country. Drive Up Standards is a national campaign to improve safety, service and work standards in the private school bus and transit industry. I personally have spent a great deal of time with this campaign, and can tell you first hand, there is not a group of more deserviing people than the School Bus Workers at First to get a good union behind them! Congrats all around! |

Builiding and fighting....
This is great. I support the Teamsters drive to organize private school bus drivers --the Drive Up Standards campaign. As far as I can tell, it's exclusively focused on First Student. I use Jr.'s quotes in my bargaining unit when I want to embarass our Business Agent. Hoffa said (basically), "we're committed to driving up wages in the School Bus industry." I'm a public employee, and my Local is very cooperative with teh school District. I hope that worker militance and perseverence can push our "leaders" to act as tough as Hoffa talks! We have to build the Teamsters, and all unions, but we can't build on cooperation and concessions.
Labor produces all wealth. Property is theft.
Headway
It is good news to hear that the Teamsters are making some headway...hopefully, when the EFCA passes, the American workforce will regain enough strength to be able to function properly again.
Other companies as well
The primary company being organized in this campaign is, no doubt, First Student/First Transit; but there is another group called Durham that is also being organized. Over at the website dedicated to the campaign, www.schoolbusworkersunited.org, click under "Our Employers," you can see what they have on the companies.
Also, you can do a search on UnionReview.com for "School Bus" and you will probably get a bunch of the victories that I've put up on here. It is a great campaign to watch from the sidelines, makes one believe all over again.
