Organizing School Bus and Transit Workers; One Yard at a Time
School bus drivers with First Student in Barrie, Ontario joined Local 938 in Mississauga after more than 72 percent of the 87 drivers in the unit signed cards to become Teamsters. “The workers heard about our local organizing and successes with other bus companies, including National Express, and approached us to become Teamsters,” said John Hull, Director of Organizing for Local 938. “They wanted better wages and to rectify seniority issues.” The drivers became Teamsters in a fairly quick process. The local collected cards within a two-week period in February. Certification recently took place and a contract proposal meeting has already been scheduled. “Since First Student runs charters going out of the province, they fall under federal legislation, which says once 50 percent plus one of the unit signs up, you make an application to the Board and then you are certified, whereas under provincial law, you have to get cards signed and go to an election.,” said Larry McDonald, President of Local 938. "The federal law is true democracy. Workers out there want to join a union and we are glad these workers joined the Teamsters." Since I am working on this campaign with the Teamsters to help the thousands of workers organize, it is truly great news to hear that the Canadian brothers and sisters went in this direction. After meeting a lot of school bus workers at the Worker Congress in Jacksonville last month, I can tell you that this is a passionate group of hard working people who simply need a voice on the job, greater respect, and better wages. They need to have affordable health care and a sense of security that their company just does not provide. The only way to accomplish these things is to form a union. One yard at a time, around the United States, Canada and even the United Kingdom, that is exactly what they're doing!

First Group a British Disaster for Americans
"One yard at a time".......
A slow and some time excruciating process for First Student and Transit workers in the US.
I have been to the United Kingdom, as a worker and an activist for fair treatment in the US. It is beyond me that a British Corporation could be allowed into our fair country and stomp all over our labor system.
It is a shame to see our children turned into Corporate Dividends.
I travel all over witnessing hard working Americans who work two and three jobs to support their families.
I don't know what value [if any] you place on your children......but mine deserve better than the bus service this company provides.
The drivers do all they can do and then do what they must do to provide for their own. Including, working multiple jobs and then proceeding on a bus route with America's children. They do this with equipment that is not properly serviced, out of date and maintained with the smallest of budgets.
It is nauseating to see this happen but then take a look at that company logo and the endless prints and needless flashy booklets that say no more than "we don't know how to effectively spend our money".
Take a look at the 300 acre ranch in Scotland and million dollar salaries on the market. See profits soar 21% in a fiscal year and endless funds spent on Union Busting firms, legal fees to stall negotiations and dvd's and postage and all the other anti tactics that will be used. Lets not forget, paying monitors to monitor their best interests.
Then read the headlines -- First Group's "Freedom of Association Policy" or better known as the FOA -- fabulous......except while this "policy" was in print.....Carey Paster's yahoo's were busy firing workers in the U.S. for assisting union's in organizing.
It is Labor Terrorism!!Sherri Henry
