Today I received a link that lead me to a NY Times story. The piece, which is on FreshDirect, is about the company's expansion into other areas of New York. While the reporter mentions that the company had some labor disputes, and that more than 80% of its workers chose to not join a union, the Times did not reveal all of the facts.
We reported on Union Review and a number of other websites, that this issue at FreshDirect was a real shame or ... um, sham. A lot of the workers were arrested, detained and deported for being in the country illegally. Interestingly enough, ICE appeared at this New York City warehouse just as the workers were choosing a union ... call me cynical, but I think that coincidence is a little much. When the company denied that they called in ICE, me and others were saying it was bullshit.
Yea, a lot of the workers chose not to unionize ... but the reality is that many of those workers were probably scared out of their wits. I believe that is why many of the workers wanted to have their last checks sent to them -- which the company refused to do. The company said that if the workers want to get their last check, they'd have to come in person and sign for them, however, "be prepared, ICE is here," they said. Unreal!
When I see stories like this at different sites, especially the NY Times and other mainstream media outlets, I try to set the record straight when comments are allowed. I urge you to do the same.

cuttting off nose in spite of face?
oh ... ok
Thanks for your comments. Clearly we disagree about this whole thing, and there is nothing wrong with that. I never said that the company actually called in ICE, but I am insinuating that this company is definitely capable of doing that. I am also saying that they could give a rat's ass about their workers, all of whom, as we saw, are easily replaced. The only thing I actually agree with you on is the fact that doing this is not good for business.
So, the next time you want to have this argument, why not tell us who you think called ICE since you believe it wasn't the company. I am totally open to learning the truth about who called them. Was it one of the American workers? Was it someone pissed off at the two unions trying to organize? Was it someone on the street? Maybe ICE just has a list and it was, in fact, totally random that they ended up at this warehouse ... I believe that as much as I believe that they care about their workers.
When company's like this company become accountable for hiring illegal aliens -- to the same level as the workers who are detained and deported-- I think the "record" will get even more straightened out.
With that all said, I am totally cool with you totally being of a different opinion and welcome it.
truth in reporting, are you a Moron or an ass?
Clearly, it's one or the other.
Where was it said that the company called ICE? ICE has been ramping up enforcement for the past couple of years and in doing so, they've been separating families.
But hey, when you're spreading anti-union lies on a site dedicated to strengthening the movement, I suppose that makes you both an ass and a moron.
Oh and just for a little history lesson, the 24th street store shut down operations so they could destroy the union. And, the overly coporate stcked NLRB actually agreed that this store, run by RealFoods actually shut the store and fired previous workers for their attempt to unionize the store.
So, um, yeah, it makes no sense at all, but they do it all the time. Kind of like how Kongsberg shut down their Swedish plant that was profitable in order to lose money for the year and move operations to Poland in hopes that the lower tax rate and lower environmental standards would mean greater profits somewhere down the road, if ever.
