The Associated Press reported this afternoon that Barack Obama "effectively clinched the Democratic presidential nomination." The announcement, the AP says, is based on its tally of convention delegates. "The tally was based on public declarations from delegates as well as from another 15 who have confirmed their intentions to the AP. It also included 11 delegates Obama was guarenteed as long as he gained 30 percent of the vote in South Dakota and Montana later in the day," the AP wrote.
On April 2nd I wrote, "Obama for President, A Worker's Reasoning" In that piece I mentioned that I was going with Obama because I believe the candidate is serious when he says he will strengthen our ability to organize unions; which is my primary concern.
I believe that Obama can help us organize unions with the passage of the Employee Free Choice Act, working on legislation that bans replacement workers, and concentrating on the epidemic that is the misclassification of workers.
Last month I was with 1300 other Teamster members at the union's 2008 Unity Conference. We were honored with a video message from Senator Obama, which solidified for me that this is the candidate for me ... with or without the union's support and endorsement.
He said in his message this current administration is not only not working for us, they are working against us. He understands that working people need more than what George Bush has provided and what John McCain promises will be the same crap for another presidential term.
While I have no interest in bashing Hillary Clinton, as I had no intention of doing it when I first wrote on this subject for Union Review; I believe it is time for Senator Clinton to step down and move forward in dignity. I think it is time she works toward uniting the Democratic Party by having her followers stand behind Senator Obama. The sooner this happens, the better; at least IMHO.
By this time tomorrow, I think we will know Clinton's next move. For now, I can honestly say that it feels as though some serious change is coming our way.
