Republican Presidential Candidates Declare Unions Good for America

Republican candidates were asked whether unions were good for America
Republican candidates were asked whether unions were good for America

Back in October, Republican candidates were asked by Chris Matthews in one of the debates if they thought unions were good for America. You might be surpised that all of them declared they thought unions were beneficial. But as you can probably guess, the candidates were quick to point out their opposition to legislation that would strengthen unions. So unions are good for America, but let's not support legislation that might make them more effective? Strange logic there, fellas.

Here's a quick summary of their responses interspersed with a little commentary:

Ron Paul: supports right of workers to join a union, opposes Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA). Remember, too, that this guy is a Libertarian who would likely abolish the NLRB if he could and thereby allow employers to freely fire workers with little repercussion. Oh wait, we basically already have that, don't we?

Mike Huckabee: Had the most enthusiastic response and thought unions were poised for a big comeback. If I had to vote Republican, I guess it would be for Huckabee. Though, he didn't say where he stood on EFCA or open shops.

John McCain: Said unions improved working conditions but then went on to disparage them as "monopolies" and expressed his support for open union shops, and his opposition to EFCA.

Mitt Romney: The consummate waffler backed up Senator McCain's sentiments and then went on with a profound statement that there were some good unions and not so good unions. Our frequent contributor here, Chuck Lezette, will be happy to know that Romney singled out the Carpenters as a good union. Does he get your vote, Chuck?

Fred Thompson: Pointed out that he supported the right of workers to band together and that was a member of the Screen Actor's Guild. Of course, Ronald Reagan was the President of SAG and look what he went ahead and did to PATCO. He echoed McCain's support for open shops and did not support use of dues money for political lobbying.

Rudy Guiliani: His second wife's second cousin was in a union (ok, I exaggerate, it was his grandmother). He said he didn't know if his family would have gotten out of poverty without the union. He would have gotten more points from me if he got the name of his Grandmother's union right. He is also against closed shops.

Duncan Hunter: Sung the praises of the United Steelworkers union. Stated unions built the middle class and that Republicans needed to work with unions to win in 2008. I guess I might consider voting for this guy, too.

Sam Brownback: Mentioned his mother was a mail carrier then focused the rest of his answer on union abuses and the need to investigate unions. Why is it that we never hear about going after all the corruption in the business world which is does far more harm to our economy than a handful of rogue union leaders ever could?

Tom Tancredo: Said workers in civil service should not have a union too. Then he proceeded to bash unions for working toward reform of the immigration laws, and accused unions of trying to swell their ranks through the reform of the laws. OK, whatever, Tom.

So, there you have it, straight from the mouths of Republicans, unions are good for America! Now go tell all your anti-union, Republican friends of yours to watch the video and see for themselves.

Unions: Good for America?

I seriously hope you dont vote for any of these people

the only hope unions have is themselves and it is true that unions should not be using money to back candidates or lobbying congress instead that money should go directly into organizing = direct action gets the goods!!

I don't see a problem with unions lobbying and endorsing

Although it would obviously be unconstitutional, if unions were barred from lobbying and and backing candidates, unions wouldn't have a leg to stand on. That's how unions, and working people, get a lot of their power. Taking away that ability would cripple unions.

How could you be against allowing unions to get involved in the political process?

organizing

I could be wrong, but I took Rebelgirl's comment as not that it shouldn't be allowed, but that it is much more effective to spend money on organizing than it is lobbying and supporting candidates.  And how could it be that "unions wouldn't have a leg to stand on?"  Unions are most effective when they are doing their main function - fighting for better working conditions.  Perhaps if unions actually supported candidates that were the most pro-union (Kucinich), political campaigning might be more effective.  No politician is going to help the working class (ultimately, the vast majority are owned by big business - Democrat or Republican) - that is something we need to do for ourselves.  If union membership was more than the 10 or 11% that it is, then politicians would be forced to take a more pro-union stance, one that actually could make a difference.  Hence, organize!

I absolutely agree, in

I absolutely agree, in one of my posts here (the Ron Paul debate about crossing the WGAE picket) the biggest problem is money is needed to educate our own on how to support each other and communicate as a unit, not as the separatists we have become. And it shows, if we have our own members crossing picket lines how do we expect any political leader to respect us. They know there are almost no ramifications. I know many union leaders who buy themselves and their family nonunion, non American cars. The Rick Berman's and Mass Media are winning the minds of rank-and-file members and the public. I stated this directly to the AFL-CIO Vice President. We are being told how to vote and to spread information on who to vote for, but we are not taking care of the publics opinions towards unions. Therefore when the next Demopublican or Republicrat gets in office things will change a little, but don't expect any miracles if we do not get our shit together in the interim. I really can't agree with any of the front runners. The Main Stream Media, the big arm of the corporations, who obviously have a tremendous vested interest in who gets elected have made a point to ridicule Paul and Kucinich, because they are not one of theirs, they both voted against the Iraq invasion and would both try to end the war and try to repeal the WTO and NAFTA agreements. The same MSM who are completely against unions have brain washed the entire nation into believing that niether candidate has any chance of getting elected. For 20+ years the worker in this country has been dealt a bad hand, and so has the mom and pop businesses which all made way to the Big Box stores who pay to get anything they want.

Here is why so many people are flocking to Ron Paul, and with what we have seen with the Clinton signed NAFTA, we should be afraid of another Clinton as President. How many millions of American jobs have we lost? I really wish that some union would have stepped up and supported Kucinich. People want change. This country needs change. The lucrative, no-bid contracts and death that are happenigng in an illegal war need to end.

Political Market

Unions should always be involved in the political market as "one part" of representing its membership. Lobbying for legislative action is important to the working men and women.

Trust but verify, and never let your guard down now just because an elected official says he is pro union, because things have a way of changing when you least expect.

Stay involved, informed, and keep them honest.

Rudy and Reagan

Side Bar: Rudy Guliani was assistant US Attorney General during the Reagan years. He was actively involved when the PATCO strike went down, which included warrants, arrest, prosecution, and jail for the strikers.

Rudy is Satan

Please by no means think I only dislike Hillary, check the link below and see why we should all hate Rudy

Rudy is Satan

Here is one of the biggest dangers to the USA ignored by all front runners

My apologies, forgot that was a pro Ron Paul video, I would love to see
Rudy debate that with Paul and Kucinich. How about Clinton Vs. Kucinich
on NAFTA and the WTO, remember she is a real estate mogul and a former
member of Wal-Mart's Board of Directors.

Ross Perot was made to be an idiot and the MSM told us all he didn't have a chance, he was right about this and NAFTA.

Niether side wants their checks to stop rolling in, and niether side is
afraid of labor in the least. Organizing and educating might be our
only hope.

Yes
if only there was a chance, my ideal match up for the Presidential race
would be Paul Vs. Kucinich, or how about both of them as Pres and Vice.

Bottom
line I will probably vote for whoever is left that voted Yes for the
Employee Free Choice Act because that serves my best interest. But that
doesn't mean I should not let my feelings be known. This is still known
as a free country, sort of, and there definitely needs to be a new
party for America's people, our sovereignty, our constitution, our
privacy, fair trade and freedom first.

GREAT POSTS

I could'nt be happier reading the opinions of everyone, we are getting the message out. so much to be done so little time. as I have stated before, Labor pushes politicians into place, politicians do not pull them up. I firmly beleive that. and while we could always use $ to inform our membership I think we have a awesome forum right here. Our Unions are changing (hopefully not to late), the country is changing and indeed our world is changing. it will be interesting to see how the Writers strike will change how media views unions, with all of the support given to them (writers) they may realize what has happened to workers and hopefully that will change how they are portrayed. And lets be brutally honest, we havent done much in promoting ourselves in the last couple of decades, and have shot ourselves in the foot  many times.

Listen closely, the workers of the world are grumbling.
