Ten Dollars an Hour for Back-Busting Work, Paid for by Donald Trump, the author of "How to get rich."
Late last night I had met up with a worker who earns $10 an hour handling trade show breakdowns at a fairly famous Donald Trump-owned Atlantic City resort and casino. The workers and his 21 coworkers organized a union with the Teamsters after shopping around for the right union to represent them against the company. In other articles I wrote about that organizing campaign and how amazing it is that these workers had the balls and tenacity to find the right union for them ... this entry is not about that, however, this is just an excerpt of opinions. If you had not been to Atlantic City lately or ever, let me tell you the streets are lined with cash being played with like it is Monopoly money. Let me tell you that the glitz and glamor wanes after the first hour (I had the same experience in Vegas ... and I have enjoyed a little gambling in my time!) The work that goes into keeping these vacation pits going is understated. I personally worked in a banquet department at a major hotel once, a long time ago ... I also did production work with two different groups ... and I know, the work is ball busting and has to be done fast, furious and accurate. Clearly, when you are doing either a set up or break down -- you are on a timeline. So, when the worker told me that both the day and swing shifts are earning a piss ant $10 an hour, I thought ... Geez, what the hell gives? For all the money that Trump goes on TV and writes books about accumulating, why would his organization pay so badly? One guy, on the swing shift, I heard brings home about $1,000 a month after deductions for health care, taxes and SSI. IN ATLANTIC CITY? What? How the hell is someone going to take care of a family on those wages? Look, if you are a young kid and you need a side job to help your folks out, sure, 10 bucks can go a long way ... but if you are a grown man, have two daughters and a wife at home ... how are you going to make it on this wage if, God forbid, something happens to your wife? When we drove past the Trump properties on the way out of AC, my girllfriend and I wanted to spit on it ... absolutely disgusted. I said to her, "And can you believe people don't want to unionize; they think that they can get what they need and want without a collective bargaining agreement and totally independent of their coworkers?" She said, "These guys are going to get what they deserve, I feel it." I feel it too. Why? Because me and a lot of other people are not planning to stop writing and talking about workers like these guys. We are going to make it front and center in people's minds that we need laws like the Employee Free Choice Act, and that a living wage is not determined by Donald Trump's bottom line. In another campaign I work on we use the slogan, "United we bargain, divided we beg." If anyone doesn't believe those words, contact Donald Trump's people. |
