Texas District 32 Finally Has a Reason to Believe in Change

This is not real. I am at at a New Media training in Washington, DC. Part of this training is to help run a campaign for a faux Texas Congressional candiate named Peggy Hudson. In keeping with plans, Peggy is posting a blog to UR to reach out to her union supporters. -Richard/UR

When a volunteer campaigner sent this blog to me, which he posted to Huffington Post, I immediately thought to share with my union endosers. What an honor!

Texas District 32 Finally Has a Reason to Believe in Change

Here in Dallas we have a real problem. The good news is that I believe (know) we now have a solution. Let me explain.

For the last four years our far right congressman JP Beauregard, a real DC insider with his hands in very deep corporate pockets, simply seemed to go deaf to the people of District 32, at least those of us that actually work for a living.

I was never a very political person. I always felt that my voice didn’t count, so why bother. Then Obama came along and my whole world turned around. Trust me when I tell you, I believe in change and God knows I was ready for change.

So, I became a volunteer in the campaign, worked day and night, and I loved every minute. Suddenly I became immersed in politics, and especially here at home in Dallas.

Of course, I always knew who JP Beauregard was. One year the moron used our tax dollars for a cheap campaign stunt (that got him a shit ton of media, no pun intended). If his name sounds familiar to thouse outside of Texas, it is because he is the incumbent who drove into our neighborhoods in the district with a truck full of manure. He was claiming at the time that Clinton’s healthcare system stunk worse than manure. What a way to spend taxpayer dollars!

Enter Peggy Hudson
Hudson, a civil servant with real Texas values, believes in healthcare for all, strong public schools and promising jobs to help grow our community as WE see it. Peggy and her family made a life-long commitment to helping our neighbors, and advocating for change in the entire state.

I took the following from her site. It is where she stands on the issues and the change she can bring to my district. Not only am I voting for Peggy, I am now volunteering on her campaign.

Peggy on Education
It’s time for us to prepare our kids for college and the jobs of tomorrow.  When we invest in education, communities flourish and economies grow faster. By supporting and recruiting new teachers for our district, we will build our capacity for a sustainable economy in District 32. I am calling on you as parents, business leaders and concerned citizens across the district to join together to respond to the needs of our community here in Dallas. To prepare our kids for the 21st century, I propose the following

  • Aggressive recruitment of talented new teachers
  • Professional development for teachers and smaller classroom sizes
  • Greater access to higher education and merit-based state scholarships
  • Increased funding for university research and student retention programs

Our kids deserve better. Our future depends on it.

Peggy on Healthcare
With the monumental passage of healthcare reform, our question is no longer “Should we reform healthcare?” instead it is “How is the passage of this legislation going to affect me and my family.” With health care reform legislation signed into law, we now have a comprehensive approach to expanding coverage, controlling costs, and improving quality for all Texans.

What does healthcare reform mean for our Middle Class?

  • Tax credits are available immediately for small businesses who offer coverage, and small businesses will have more affordable, stable insurance choices.
  • It closes the Medicare prescription drug 'donut hole' and protects and strengthens Medicare for our seniors and for future generations.
  • It helps more than 32 million Americans afford health care who cannot afford it today, including 15 million children.
  • It provides the largest middle class tax cut for health care in history, reducing premium costs for millions of working families and small business owners who can't afford it.
  • It holds insurance companies accountable. Gets skyrocketing premium costs under control. Prevents insurance industry abuses and denial of care.
  • It will end discrimination against Americans with pre-existing conditions.

Peggy also aims to ease financial burden on senior citizens by advocating for more affordable medication alternatives and community clinics.

Peggy on Employment
Peggy stands for opportunity, training and support for first time entrepreneurs, small business owners, and localized industries that provide high wages.  Dallas has been hit hard by the economic downturn.  Through increasing investments in public education, particularly math and science and technology curriculums and investing in job training programs, we can arm Texans with the skills necessary to compete in 21st century industries.  We must also focus our efforts on creating clean energy technologies that will not just reduce the cost of energy but also create millions of new jobs to pave the way for our future economic security.
I will stand firm to protect and promote the economic engines of the Dallas community.
I will ensure that we receive federal resources and benefits from policies to promote sustainability and economic opportunities for District 32.
I plan to positively impact the economic landscape of Texas District 32 for jobseekers and employers alike through:

  • The creation of job fairs, bringing together interested citizens with local, state, and federal agencies to create real job opportunities within the district
  • Extending unemployment benefits, job training, and mortgage assistance programs for those who are still waiting for the economic recovery to reach them.
  • Summer employment programs for youth and job training
  • Grants to help students move from high school to a number of post-high school education options, and then on to skilled careers
