Today in Labor History: Ronald Regaan tells PATCO workers to get back to work, or lose their jobs! August 3, 1981
There is a lot to be said and remembered about this job action. The one that always sticks out in my mind is the sad fact that it is the first time, that I know of, when a union was busted by a former president of a local union. Ronald Regan broke the back of labor, this much is true. But there is more than that: For one, it is known that the labor federations begged the striking workers to get back to work. Other union workers regularly crossed that line, in other words there was zero solidarity. Can you imagine what history would be like if we all stood together? A couple years ago I wrote a story about PATCO. I would like to invite you to check out that piece, and if you want, comment here about your thoughts. |
