Will the AFL-CIO Bring Labor Behind Obama?
The AFL-CIO is running one of the best anti-McCain campaigns out there. The information provided by the labor federation is easy to understand and really packs a punch. Working people, especially those of us online most of the time, need to use their information as we work to spread the word gearing up toward the elections. Yet, there is a question that lingers: Will the AFL-CIO officially back Barack Obama? According to an AP article I read today, the AFL-CIO will be meeting up with Obama this week in private discussions. The article says, "Obama still needs to make amends with many in the labor movement; at least a dozen AFL-CIO unions, including the powerful American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees and the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, backed his Democratic rival, Hillary Rodham Clinton." While there are good reasons, I am guessing, why those unions went with Clinton, the NY Senator is now backing Obama herself, these unions should follow suit ... and do it quick. It would be ideal if labor came together behind one canidate, put little pissing matches to the side, and worked with some scope of solidarity toward getting Obama elected. This election is important for us to win so that we can go on with the work in front of us. Obama has gone on record about everything from the Employee Free Choice Act to revisiting NAFTA. He has gone on record about misclassification issues that plague the union movment, as well as showing interest in proposing legislation that would ban replacement workers. If this is not labor's candidate, who is? I am sure there would be others if our system was not the way that it was, but if we work with what we have ... and what we have is a two-party run off, fair or not -- we need to make sure Barack Obama is made president this year. Don't you agree? |
